Shared Consensual Hallucinations? Style and Subversion in Mixed Reality

Are you interested in bringing a bit more Mixed Reality into your interaction design classroom? Are you excited to make a quick Augmented Reality prototype yourself?

This workshop will be co-presented as a convergence of professional and academic insights into interaction design for the mixed reality spectrum. We will show precedents, both polished and glitchy. The overarching design-historical theme of the workshop is the provocation that the latest iterations of WebVR tools are poised to democratize interaction design for mixed reality. Just as the increasing accessibility of print technologies in the 1980s spurred inflections in the history of graphic design from desktop publishing to ‘zines and punk rock poster art, this workshop will present opportunities for both affirmative and subversive design pieces for MR. The workshop will have three parts. First, a survey of MR projects, both stylish and subversive. Second, a one-hour participatory Aframe AR workshop, oriented for students with rudimentary HTML skills, a laptop, a smartphone, and a quick imagination. The workshop activities will include designing a unique and expressive AR marker using old copy machines. Then each participant will make a quick Aframe AR web-based app for that marker using assets such as basic 3D geometry, animated GIFs and sound clips. Finally, the workshop will conclude with some follow-up resources including comparisons of the latest builds of quick and sketchy mixed reality design tools. There will be emphasis on strategies for keeping the technology light and inclusive by using cut and paste, lo-fi, smaller gifs, dividing code, and framing intentional glitchiness as strategies with political or social design potential. At the conclusion of the workshop, each participant will have their own AR piece to share and celebrate!
